What, moving again ??

October 25, 2014

Well....what can I say; I have been bored with Blogger for a while now...and I suppose with my prolonged unemployment making me even more bored generally - I wanted to try something else with my blogging too...so yes: I have a new blog. Again.

I've only scribbled down a couple of posts at LIFE AS ZELLA so far, but as I just got the feedburner problem solved and hence it is possible for people to subscribe via email there too, I'm publishing the blog here now. Take a peek and hopefully you'll follow me there in the future. I will be on Blogger still to read your lovely blogs so this is definitely not a goodbye. My new blog will continue with the same themeless journal type rambling, so nothing new there except a different platform. Welcome !

Eli Bloggeriin jo vähän aikaa kyllästyneenä ja muutenkin uusia virikkeitä kaivanneena päätin jälleen avata uuden blogin. LIFE AS ZELLA on aivan alkutekijöissään vielä tässä vaiheessa, mutta koska pienten teknisten aloitusongelmien jälkeen sain nyt sinnekin tuon sähköpostilla seuraamisen fixattua, niin 'julkaisen' blogin nyt tänään. Aihepiiri pysyy samana, vain bloggausalusta muuttuu. Toivottavasti seuraat minua uuteen osoitteeseenkin, mikäli jutut yhtään kiinnostavat. Tervetuloa !

Perjantai & punnitus

October 24, 2014

Heh....ei se liikunta, vaan se syömättömyys.

Tämä paino ei siis todellakaan ole oikeaa painonpudotusta - kroppa on väliaikaisesti keventynyt tällaisella harppauksella viime viikosta yksinkertaisesti siksi, että olen (taloudellisista syistä) syönyt koko viikon aika heikonlaisesti - samasta syystä jätin liikkumisetkin pois, sillä energiaa ei olisi urheiluun riittänyt.

Aurinkoista viikonloppua :)

Need perspective ?

October 19, 2014

This is Harmony-Rose from England, she's 11 months old. Isn't she adorable ?

Just a few weeks after taking her first steps Harmony-Rose got ill in late September. Her parents grew very worried and tried taking her to the doctor's not once, but twice. The doctors didn't see anything alarming in the baby's condition and sent the family their merry way. Not once, but twice.

During the third visit to the hospital, when Harmony-Rose was already turning blue, the doctors finally took her in - turned out she had meningitis, which then caused septicaemia. She fought and she survived - but because she didn't receive treatment early enough she is now in intense care waiting for an operation that will have all her limbs amputated.

Just a few days ago I was reading one of the blogs I follow, and the subject of this particular blog post was whether or not people believe that everything happens for a reason. I've often pondered that question myself: sometimes it is easier to face tough times when you fool yourself into thinking that there is some deeper meaning in that suffering, you know ? Then there are also those people who luck out time after time and they proclaim it is because they are 'open to good things' and sort of allow happiness in their lives.

How does this work with people like Harmony-Rose ? What is the meaning of all this ? She will be ah so noble in later life because she'll have tons of compassion towards others due to her own suffering ? She will be the face of survival and overcoming obstacles ? I bet she would swap all that in a second for arms and legs.

Reading about people like Harmony-Rose not only completely breaks my heart, but it also makes me realize that life is but a series of random, good/bad incidents and while some people get lucky, others get unlucky - and none of this depends on your attitude or outlook on life. Life isn't fair because there is no fairness in random existence.

And personally - no matter how bad I feel about my current circumstances, reading about stories like Harmony-Rose's makes me once again realize I have NOTHING to complain about. I can go for a walk, I can run - I can brush my teeth. I can sit down, sit up, jump if I want to, sit crossed legged on the floor meditating. So what if I don't have a job, have shit loads of debt and live my life alone ? So what if I never work again, never love again ? I've been healthy for 46 years and counting - I should remember that and count my blessings...as with many other smaller things.

Perspective....good to get a kick in the butt sometimes.

Got $95 million ?

October 15, 2014

432 Park Avenue, New York.

On this side of the Atlantic there aren't big enough money lotteries (to my knowledge) that would enable you to purchase this insane penthouse apartment in Manhattan --- but hey, one can dream, right ?

Seriously though....what kind of people can even afford to buy a place with a price tag as absurd as this ? Doesn't it all seem a bit...too much ?

Let's say I win $ 200 million in a lottery (yeah, right) -- I would never, ever buy a place like this even though Manhattan is my favorite place in the world ! Yeah, I would buy a place in New York (and Miami, and San Francisco...and Thailand...and in Italy...maybe Switzerland...) - but I'd never feel the need to go overboard. Penthouse ? Maybe, but not with a two digit price tag. Three or four bedrooms for guests, nice kitchen, a view over Central Park perhaps...and that's it. I hope the people who can afford apartments like this give to charity as well.

Ah, but I digress. It IS a gorgeous apartment, isn't it ?

Mennyt viikko

October 12, 2014

Keskiviikko: kuntosali [juoksu 42 min]
Torstai: lepo [lepo]
Perjantai: kuntosali [laiskuus]
Lauantai: kävely [kävely 50 min]
Sunnuntai: juoksu [juoksu 57 min]

Ihanaa alkavaa viikkoa !

Depressed ? No, just Finnish

October 8, 2014

I was online trying to find something funny yet informative -books, articles, jokes- to send to my foreign pen pals...and I came across this BLOG - Finnish language for culture and fun.

The below blog post is from 2008, but I thought it's quite funny :)

Pekka, an expatriate Finnish man visiting California, was recently diagnosed as clinically depressed, tanked up on anti-depressants and scheduled for controversial Shock Therapy when doctors realised he wasn’t depressed at all - only Finnish.

Mr Pekka, whose characteristic pessimism and gloomy perspective were interpreted as serious clinical depression, was led on a nightmare journey through the American psychiatric system. Doctors described Pekka as suffering with Pervasive Negative Anticipation - a belief that everything will turn out for the worst, whether it’s trains arriving late, Finland’s chances at winning any international sports event or even his own prospects to get ahead in life and achieve his dreams.

“The satisfaction Mr Pekka seemed to get from his pessimism seemed particularly pathological,” reported the doctors.
“They put me on everything - Lithium, Prozac, St John’s Wort,” said Mr Pekka
“They even told me to sit in front of a big light for an hour a day or I’d become suicidal. I kept telling them this was all pointless and they said that it was exactly that sort of attitude that got me here in the first place.”

Running out of ideas, his doctors finally resorted to a course of “weapons grade amphetamine”, the only noticeable effect of which was six hours of speedy repetitions of the phrases “mustn’t grumble” and “not too bad, really”.

It was then that Mr Pekka was referred to a psychotherapist. Dr Isaac Horney explored Mr Pekka’s family history and couldn’t believe his ears.

“His story of a childhood growing up in a grey little town where it rained every day, gloomy snow-filled streets of identical houses and passionately backing a hockey team who never won, seemed to be typical depressive ideation or false memory. Mr Pekka had six months of therapy but seemed to mainly want to talk about the weather - how miserable and cold it was in winter and later how difficult and hot it was in summer. I felt he wasn’t responding to therapy at all and so I recommended drastic action - namely ECT or shock treatment”.

“I was all strapped down on the table and they were about to put the rubber bit in my mouth when the psychiatric nurse picked up on my accent,” said Mr Pekka. “I remember her saying ‘Oh my God, I think we’re making a terrible mistake’.” Nurse Alice Sheen was from Upper Peninsula Michigan, and recognized the descriptions. Identifying Mr Pekka as Finnish changed his diagnosis from ‘clinical depression’ to ‘rather quaint and charming’ and he was immediately discharged from hospital, with a selection of brightly coloured leaflets and an “I love California” T-shirt.

Syöksykierre

October 6, 2014

Jep, jep. Huomenn, huomenna... yeah, right !
