Closing a book

June 7, 2015

Vaikken koskaan todennäköisesti lopetakaan ottamasta osaa green card-lottoon, ja Yhdysvalloilla tulee aina olemaan erityinen paikka sydämessäni (olen joskus määritellyt itseni suomalaiseksi jolla on amerikkalainen sydän, ha !)

Kaksi vuotta, kymmenen vuotta.

En siis aio enää hakea - edes katsella - työpaikkoja rapakon takaa. En sorru haaveilemaan tulevista omista kuvioistani lukiessani ulkosuomalaisten blogeja jenkeistä.

************

I just realized after the actual date that on June 4th eleven years had passed since the day when I had to leave the U.S. behind and return to Finland. Last year, on that ten year 'anniversary' I wrote a blog post about my feelings - see it HERE.

This year I didn't notice the date and I think it's because my mind and my plans are elsewhere, in things that are actually doable and realistic. I believe this is a good thing. Even though I doubt that I will ever stop taking part in the green card lottery, and even though the U.S. will always have a very special place in my heart (I've sometimes referred to myself as a Finnish woman with an American heart, ha !) - I do think that the time is right now to let go of this (impossible) dream.

Often in social media and in life otherwise you see those slogans and quotes that encourage you to "never give up on your dreams". It is said that if you just believe with all your might, with all your heart in that which you desire....your dream WILL come true. If it doesn't ? Well, you must not have believed hard enough !

I cannot even find the words to describe how deeply I have believed. Man, ever since my first experience of a life in New York back in 1994 to my second five year stint in South Florida; I have never ceased believing that one day I will be back home again, and it will be for good this time.  And, while I've never put my life on hold for this dream of mine, nor have I skipped other opportunities that have come my way....it has been a draining life to live, alternatively being able to convince yourself that this dream WILL come true again - and then realizing another year has gone by, and another. Five years, ten years. You know what ? No more. Today I am making myself a promise: I will no longer browse or apply for jobs in the States. I will not allow myself to get sentimental and/or start imagining my own future life in the USA when reading blogs by Finns living across the pond. I won't shed a tear whilst seeing familiar streets and buildings on TV when I catch a glimpse of a document or a movie from New York or Southern Florida. Nope !

I will cherish my memories and try to be grateful that I did, in fact, have the privilege to experience that feeling of belonging somewhere not once, but twice in my life. Not everyone has even that, ever. I am going to trust the Universe and believe that by letting go the biggest dream of my life I will hopefully gain something else, something beyond beautiful in the future.

Goodbye my beloved.
